See the full Kolpak parts category →Kolpak walk-in coolers and freezers are built to run for a decade or more with almost no attention, which is exactly why most failures catch operators off guard — by the time a walk-in stops holding temperature, it's usually been losing efficiency for weeks. The good news is that Kolpak failures cluster around a small set of components, and diagnosing which one is straightforward if you check them in the right order.
Check in this order
- Door gasket: the most common failure and the cheapest to fix. A cracked, flattened, or torn gasket lets warm, humid air in continuously, which forces the compressor to run far more than it should and eventually iced-over evaporator coils. Run a dollar-bill test — close the door on a bill and pull; if it slides out with little resistance, the gasket needs replacing.
- Door hinges & latch: sagging hinges keep the door from sealing fully even with a good gasket, and a worn latch can leave the door slightly ajar without an obvious sign.
- Evaporator fan motor: if the box is cold near the evaporator but warm everywhere else, the fan isn't circulating air — listen for the motor; a seized or slow fan motor is a common mid-life failure.
- Compressor / condensing unit: the most expensive failure and the least common relative to the two above. Signs include the compressor short-cycling, tripping its overload repeatedly, or running continuously without the box ever reaching setpoint.
Find your model and serial number first
Kolpak's data plate is usually on the exterior panel next to the door, with the condensing unit's own plate mounted separately on the unit itself — record both numbers before ordering a compressor, fan motor, or electrical part, since the panel and the refrigeration package are often sized independently. This is the same first step covered in our general worn-parts replacement guide.
Don't see the exact part listed?
Compressors and condensing units are matched to refrigerant type, horsepower, and voltage, so we always confirm compatibility before shipping one. Email your Kolpak panel and condensing-unit model and serial numbers to info@prokitchenspares.com and we'll confirm the correct part and lead time — see also our FAQ for how we source parts that aren't yet listed in the catalog.
Frequently Asked Questions — Kolpak Walk-In Cooler & Freezer Parts: Common Failures & Where to Find Them
Why is my Kolpak walk-in cooler running but not getting cold?
The three most common causes, in order of likelihood, are: a failed or weak evaporator fan motor (you'll hear it running slower or not at all), a low or leaking refrigerant charge from a worn door gasket letting warm air in constantly, or a failing compressor/condensing unit. Check the door gasket seal first — it's the cheapest fix and the most common cause.
Where is the model and serial number on a Kolpak walk-in?
Kolpak's data plate is typically mounted on the exterior of the panel next to the door, or inside the unit near the light switch. It lists both the panel model number and, separately, the condensing unit's model and serial number — you'll usually need both to order the correct compressor or electrical part.
